OnYourBike 2010

Join the 4th annual 'On Your Bike' event, the largest family cycle ride in South Oxfordshire. The ride explores the leafy lanes and stunning local countryside and this year offers a third more challenging distance of 20 miles, in addition to the existing 5.5 and 12 mile routes. For those who do not wish to cycle, a Health Walk will be organised and there will be the usual supervised playground cycle for those unable to cycle on the roads. All rides and the walk will start and finish at Sonning Common Primary School.

The 2010 OnYourBike ride will be held on Sunday 25th April, starting at Sonning Common Primary School at 1030hrs. So start training...

100% of all entry fees will go the charities; this year Sonning Common Primary School has selected Sue Ryder Care, Nettlebed Hospice as the charity with whom the entry fees will be shared.

Organiser Penny Snowden said: "We are aiming for 1,000 riders this year, doubling our previous record. With the support of all our sponsors and volunteers, we hope to surpass all our past achievements and encourage greater participation and raise more money than ever before. We are all committed to the healthy benefits of exercise and want to enable everyone to take advantage of the beautiful countryside on our doorstep. Please, please register in advance rather than on the day. This makes the operation much smoother and greatly assists planning."

All those who enter prior to March 31st will be entered into a free prize draw to win a bike donated by AW Cycles. The draw will be made on April 1st so that the winner can practise during the Easter Holidays and then cycle on the bike at the event. A second bike also donated by AW Cycles will be raffled on the day to raise additional funds.

As far as the organisers know, this is the only event where participants are guaranteed that 100% of the entry fees will go to the charities. This is only possible with the support of all the individuals and companies who sponsor and help organise the event, whose logos appear on our poster and leaflet.

The event was started by the Sonning Common Primary School Parent Teacher Association (PTA) but the ride is a cross-community activity and is open to anybody of any age who feels that they can complete the distance. It is supported by the local GP practice as part of their ongoing commitment to encouraging exercise.

The routes cover quiet country roads (although there is a short stretch on a gravelly track) and are designed to be enjoyable rather than challenging. Young people under 16 must be under the supervision of an adult. We expect everyone to obey the Highway Code and share the road sensibly with other users: cars, walkers and horses.

On Your Bike 2010 is proud to be a warm up event for national bike week 19-27 June 2010, more information is available here (external site)
